iconTeeth Whitening
  • How does it work?

Over the years tooth enamel is worn down resulting in teeth becoming more transparent, which permits the yellow colour of dentin- the tooth’s care material- to show through. Stains & debris can build up on the tooth’s surface giving it a dull, lack lustre appearance. The process is safe, easy & effective. Our teeth whitening kits are hygienically sealed & have ACCC & ADIA approved gels.

  • What causes staining?

Age- Teeth darken due to wear & tear over time

Starting colour- We all naturally have an inbuilt tooth colour that ranges from yellow/ brownish to greenish/ grey & intensifies over time. Yellow/ brownish is generally more responsive to whitening.

Translucency & thinness- These are usually genetic traits that become more pronounced with age.

Eating habits- Habitual consumption of red wine, coffee, tea, cola, carrots, oranges & other deeply coloured beverages/ foods cause considerable staining over time. Also acidic foods such as citrus fruits & vinegar contribute to enamel erosion.

Smoking habits- Nicotine leaves brownish deposits which slowly soak into the tooth structure & cause intrinsic discolourisation.

Grinding- Usually caused by stress, grinding & gnashing can add to micro-cracking in the teeth & can cause darkening.

Trauma- Falls or injuries can produce cracks in the teeth, which collect large amounts of staining & debris.

There are 2 kind of staining- Extrinsic & Intrinsic

Extrinsic stains are those that appear on the surface of the tooth as a result of exposure to things like coffee, red wine, tea,, foods, tobacco & routine wear & tear. Teeth whitening can effectively remove these types of superficial stains.

Intrinsic stains are those that form on the interior of the tooth. These may be a result of trauma, aging, and exposure to mineral, chemicals & antibiotics. These stains exist below the enamel & are unlikely to benefit from teeth whitening.

  • How long does it take?

Less than 1 hour is all you need to achieve maximum results.

  • What results can I expect?

Results can vary considerably from person to person. Most are immediately delighted with the outcome. Most clients see a change of 2-9 shades while some clients have had dramatic results of even up to 20 shades.

The gentle gel will not affect restorations such as bonding, dental crowns or porcelain veneers as these will maintain their default colour. The surrounding teeth will be whitened however. We recommend teeth whitening for people whose restoration default colour is lighter than the surrounding teeth, as this will give them a more even result.

  • Who should not have teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women as the potential risk to the baby is not yet known.

Individuals with highly sensitive teeth, gum disease or those in need of dental work should consult their dentist before having a whitening procedure.

  • Before & after care

Before– Make sure you brush your teeth prior to your appointment. Please arrive 10 minutes early to read & sign the consent form before your treatment.

After– We recommend that you DO NOT consume anything that would stain a white shirt for example; tea, coffee, red wine, curry etc for 12 hours after your treatment, as the teeth are more susceptible to re-staining during that time.
